Tourism related practices have been taking place across the world at all tourists’ attraction points as it is a
resource for economic and social benefits. Tourism visitors’ interaction with parents, teachers and pupils
was expected to have a negative influence on pupils’ academic performance in KCPE in Narok West Sub
County. The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of tourism related socio-economic
activities on pupils academic performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Narok
West Sub County. The study used descriptive survey research design. There are 81 public pry schools
doing KCPE in Narok West Sub County with a total population of 1,720 class 8 pupils. A sample of 30
percent of both the schools and class 8 pupils was purposively and randomly selected respectively to get
24 public pry Schools with a population of 587 class eight pupils who were further subjected into a
selection of 176 pupils, 24 head teachers and 24 BOM Chairpersons to make a total of 224 respondents
who were selected to participate in the study. The study used pupils, teachers and pupils questionnaires
and interview schedules for teachers, and parents to collect data. Descriptive statistics was used. The
results showed that poor pupils’ academic performance in KCPE was attributed to social issues brought
about by tourism activities such as indiscipline, substance abuse, pregnancy, perceived gender roles,
family breakups and lack of interest in school. The results implied that besides the benefits of tourism in
improving the livelihoods of the communities through employment, purchase of their artwork and other
economic support benefits, tourism activities have many challenges that influence the social well-being of
the community and hence it affects the academic performance of the learners who are unable to complete
schooling or take school seriously because of the handouts they get from the tourists. It was found that
most pupils follow tourists and engage in various activities for the purpose of getting money to support
themselves and their families. The researcher established that there was influence of tourism related
socio-economic activities on pupils academic performance in Narok West Sub County therefore, the
researcher recommends that the schools board of management (BOM) committees to address tourism
related socio-economic barriers to education by ensuring that pupils, teachers and parents are sensitized
on the impact of tourism interaction on pupils academic performance. The study also recommends, the
schools BOMs should enhance guidance and counseling in their schools so as to address the tourism
related socioeconomic challenges facing the pupils such as absenteeism from attending learning lessons
as a result of child labor. This will increase pupils’ participation in school thereby enhancing their
academic performance.

Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of the school curriculum in Kenya. It enhances the
physical, intellectual and social development of the learner. However, concerns have been raised
on the effective implementation of PE in schools. The purpose of this study was to establish
teacher related factors influencing the implementation of Physical Education in public primary
schools in Manga Sub County, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to: establish teachers’
preparedness for the implementation of PE, find out the perceptions of teachers towards PE and
to determine teachers’ use of teaching and learning resources for the implementation of PE. The
study was guided by the General Systems Theory. The study adopted a descriptive survey
research design. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to
sample respondents for the study. The study sample constituted of: 19 headteachers, 155 teachers
and 4 Zonal Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (ZQASOs) in Manga Sub County. The
instruments used for data collection included; questionnaires, an interview schedule and
observation checklist. The research instruments were piloted in 2 public primary schools from
Manga Sub County. The 2 schools were not included in the main study. Content validity was
enhanced by ensuring adequate and appropriate items in the instruments were relevant to the
research objectives. The test-retest method was used to test the reliability of the questionnaire
and Pearson’s product moment formula was used to compute the correlation coefficient. A
correlation coefficient of 0.75 was obtained. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics that
included frequencies and percentages. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software
was used to analyze the data. The results were presented using tables and figures. The study
found out that the implementation of PE in primary schools was not effective. Majority of the
teachers do not teach PE lessons and they also lack in service training hence the level of their
preparedness for the implementation of PE in schools is low. Teachers had positive perceptions
towards PE but little effort is put to enhance its implementation in schools. The findings of the
study also indicated that schools lacked adequate facilities and equipment for PE. However,
majority of the teachers never made use of the available PE resources that could facilitate the
implementation process. Based on these findings, this study recommended that the Ministry of
Education in conjunction with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) should
organize refresher courses for all teachers in primary schools on the implementation of PE. It is
hoped that the findings and recommendations of the study will be useful in filling the gaps in the
implementation of PE and also provide insights that curriculum implementers can incorporate to
ensure effective implementation of PE in schools.

Shibo, Margaret Nekesa
The purpose of this study was to compare the influence of management styles of head teacher’s on pupils’ performance in private and public primary schools in Nakuru municipality at Kenya Certificate of Primary Education level. The population comprised of teachers and head teachers in public primary schools. The study adopted the ex post facto survey research design and used a sample size of 70 primary schools in which 70 Head teachers and 70 teachers were interviewed. The respondents were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data for the study was collected by use of questionnaires and interview schedules. The study collected both qualitative and quantitative data. Data collected was analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17. The results were presented by descriptive statistics. The study findings revealed that most public primary schools were using democratic and participatory leadership styles as opposed to private primary schools, which were mainly using autocratic leadership style; private primary schools were performing better than Public primary schools in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Nakuru municipality; most teachers in both private and public primary schools were not comfortable with the prevailing / current leadership styles and administration standards, and negatively related this with student performance. The findings further revealed a positive Spearman rank correlation between school mean mark and team working spirit r(62)=0.078) p>0.05; and a positive Spearman rank correlation between school mean mark and adequate reading materials r(62)= 0.094) p>0.05. Although the two correlations were not significant. Following these findings, the study recommends that the Ministry of Education, school governing bodies, and concerned stakeholders should consider mobilizing and allocating resources geared towards mitigating the impediments to the effectiveness of primary school leadership styles.

Resource Management Challenges and Learners Academic Performance in National Examinations: What are the coping strategies in Public Primary Schools in Makindu District, Makueni County, Kenya?
Mutungwa, Joseph Mutisya; Orodho, John Aluko
The gist of the study was to examine the challenges and main coping strategies on resource management and academic performance amongst primary schools in Makindu District, Makueni County, Kenya. The study was premised on Hunts (2007) theory on project management. A descriptive survey design was adopted. A combination of Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were s used to draw 25 head teachers, 200 teachers and 25 chairpersons of Parents Teachers Association (PTAs), yielding a total sample of 250 respondents. Interview schedules and questionnaires were used to collect data from chairpersons and headteachers/teachers, respectively. The study established that the various resource management challenges were: inadequate funding by the Government through the Ministry of Education, overstretched physical facilities as well as inefficient utilization of the available physical and human resources in schools. In addition, there was a positive and significant correlation between the effectiveness of resource management strategies and learners’ academic performance in national examination. The researcher recommended that schools managers should involve teachers and learner in decision making process and management strategies that enhance learners academic performance in national examinations in the study locale of Makindu District, Makueni County, Kenya.
